Please have finished reading The Jungle

Okay, so The Jungle is a novel.  What does it do that a series of hardhitting news article couldn't?  What does it give us that an in depth documentary work about the industry couldn't(like Fast Food Nation or Supersize Me, for instance)?  In other words, what perspective or effect is added to the problem by choosing to deliver this story as a work of fiction?  I would like to see two pages of rumination by you on this subject.
