OBJECTIVE:

To play with letters in an metaphorical, abstract and non-linear way.

WHERE TO BEGIN?

Choose from the following words and devise a strategy whereby your choice of font, it’s rendering, execution and compostion, all serve to further convey the meaning of the word itself.

  • CONGESTION
  • GROWTH
  • PLAYFULNESS
  • PATTERN
  • TEXTURE
  • EDUCATION
  • TRAFFIC
  • CACOPHONY
  • SMASH
  • MIMICRY

STRATEGIES:

Consider double meanings that may be present in the word you chose.  Reviewing the language we have been using this semester – balance, directional dominance, scale, value, shape, line – and have this influence the compositions you work out in your thumbnails and your final piece.

PROCEDURE:

In your sketchbook, experiment with composition and strategy.  Work in pen or pencil for these brainstorms.  Try multiple words…

INGENUITY is KEY

REMEMBER THAT CRAFT COUNTS.

Materials:

You choose the scale – no smaller than a 10 x 10 inch square

You can use any of the media we have worked with through the semester

  • · the completed composition mounted on a trimmed piece of presentation board (from the Painting studio – mount on the white side) –
