Course Policies & Grading

Attendance is mandatory and is part of your grade. Please, let me know ahead of time if, and why, you will miss a class.

You are not expected to master the material before class. However, you are expected to know the vocabulary introduced in the reading and to come to class prepared to discuss the material and ask questions. This is critical for having productive class time.

Homework will be assigned weekly. Homework is an essential tool to learn and to receive feedback. For this reason it is important that you hand in your assignments on time. Students are encouraged to work together on the homework assignments. However, your final write-up of the solutions must represent your own understanding; copying another person's work is plagiarism and will result in no credit for that assignment.

In addition to the weekly assignments, there will be three take home tests/papers during the semester. You are expected to work independently on them.

Late work will not be accepted without prior arrangement. Academic Honesty is expected of all scientists, and also of all students. Cheating on homework or the final exam will result in no credit.

Observations: during the semester we will go to observe. The number of observations and the days in which they will be scheduled will be based on the majority of the class availability and weather. You are expected to participate a minimum of 80% of the nights.

40% weekly homework
15% class attendance, class participation and observation attendance
45% take home tests
