Week I (Sept. 5)

  • Readings: Just Food Index (link on courses page)
  • Focus: One Food System, reading despair, and next steps

Week II (Sept. 10 & 12)

  • Readings: Deleuze, through p. 14 and Chap. 6; Spinoza, "Portrait of the Philosopher as a Young Man" (Curley, 3-6). 
  • Concepts: Liberalism, Cartesianism
  • Practical matters: What does it look like to stop thinking about bodies as forms with functions and start thinking about them in terms of affects and velocity?

Week III (Sept. 17 & 19)

  • Readings: Ethics Part I
  • Concepts: Substance, Attributes, Cause (Check out Deleuze, Chap.4 for assistance in this regard)
  • Practical matters: How do we stay close to substance?

Week IV (Sept. 24 & 26)

  • Readings: Ethics Part II
  • Concepts: ideas, common notions
  • Practical matters: How do we form common notions?

Week V (Oct. 1 & 3)

  • Readings: Ethics Part III
  • Concepts: affects, conatus
  • Practical matters: How can we better understand our emotions?
  • Five-Page Essay Due 10/3

Week VI (Oct. 8 & 10)

  • Readings: Ethics Part IV
  • Concepts: mode, cause (first, proximate, efficient)
  • Practical matters: Why do we desire our enslavement?

Week VII (Oct. 15 & 17)

  • Readings: Ethics Part V
  • Concepts: love, hate
  • Practical matters: What habits must we cultivate for freedom?
  • Revised Essays Due 10/15

Week VII (Oct.24)

Week VIII (Oct. 29 & 31)

  • Readings: TPT, Preface, Chap. 1 & 2
  • Concepts: superstition, natural divine law
  • Practical matters: Confronting 21st century superstitions.

Week IX (Nov. 5 & 7)

  • Readings: TPT, Chap. 3 & 4
  • Concepts: nature, God
  • Practical matters: What does it mean to understand through first causes?
  • Five-Page Essay Due 11/7

Week X (Nov. 12 & 14)

Week XII (Nov. 26)

Week XIII (Dec 3 & 5)

  • Practical matters: What role should the state play in protecting our thoughts?

Week XIV (Dec. 10)

  • Readings: Deleuze, Chap. 3; Spinoza "The Worm in the Blood" (Curley 82-84)  & Letter 58.
  • Practical matters: What were our best experiments?
  • Final Reflection Paper Due Friday the Thirteenth
