Assignments:

  • Choose an object currently on display in the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art gallery of “The Art of  the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia,” (making sure you do not laugh at the absurd title of these galleries) and research its history and provenance. Prepare a five to ten minute presentation on the object to be delivered to the class when we are in the Met on March 2. You should post a short piece for students to read before our museum visit and hand in your presentation plus an on-site visual analysis of the piece on March 5.
  • A sketchbook/notebook that you will work on over the course of the semester as we prepare to go to Turkey, then you will use extensively while you are in Turkey to record ideas, sketch and otherwise make sense of what we are seeing and doing. You will hand this in when we return.
  • Research Paper on a building in either Istanbul or Bursa and its tile program. This is a straight-forward project, find out all you can about your chosen building, write it up and describe and analyze the tile program. You should complete much of the research before we go so that you can do a careful on-site analysis of the building and the state of its tiles while we are in Turkey. This project will be due three weeks after our return.
  • Studio tile project submitted in three parts: proposal, planning and creation of the tiles and installation.   - see additional page -
