Making YOUR work -- Week 1 -- Raw Material

Your assignment for this week is to GET STARTED!

Work in the studio.  Make movement.  Try stuff out.  Find your way.

This is the time to EXPERIMENT, so work vigorously this week.  Get to know this animal that you're trying to create.   Very soon, you'll need to set a draft of the piece, so get the most out of this open exploratory time at the beginning of the process.

Secure dancers (unless you're making a solo) and set up a clear rehearsal schedule with them.  You should have at least 2 hours per week with your dancers every week between now and the show, and if the dancers play a large role in the piece, you need at least 3-4 hours with them per week.  Ask them for this time NOW and schedule the dates and times of rehearsals.  It will be very hard to make good work if you do not have ample, clearly defined time with your dancers.

Feel free to use Stan and Kristin during the week if you need resources or are getting stuck.

Bring material to show in class on Friday. This can be movement phrases, a section of the piece, a structured improvisation of the arc of the piece, etc.  Everyone must show movement this first week.

If you have dancers, find a time they can come to Friday's class (preferably between 2:30 and 4:30) OR a time they can come to Wednesday's class.  Communicate with your instructors about any specific timing needs that you have for your group.

Have fun!
