Questions to Consider about Famines

What is famine (according to the author)?

Where are the people?  (not geography exactly, but what are the people involved doing – are they dying, what are they doing?)

How do the authors treat individuals versus community?

Is the famine an individual or community experience?

Moral ownership – is there anyone at fault?  (What is the authors’ understanding of morality in famine?)

What is getting destroyed?

What are the causes and how does that change what it is or how it functions?

Possible Causes:

Crop failure

War

Environmental degradation

Godly Vengeance

Issues of Supply

Excess population

Inequality

Insufficient workforce (underemployment)

Reliance on Agriculture itself (technology)
