A three-page paper in narrative form, analyzing an improvised solo. First map the solo according to the salient parameters in the music, then turn to writing, describing those parameters as they progress through time, and through your own perception, in prose. Ideally, the different parameters should be combined in your description to create a lively, engaging impression of the music as a multi dimensional progression, rather than a "shopping list" of terms described linearly.

The paper does not necessarily need to be bound by a time axis. You may wish to begin with an especially striking moment in the middle of the solo, then trace the music back and forth from that moment, for example.

Finally, the paper should make clear your thoughts of the music's worth. The more deeply the music engages you, and the clearer the expression of that engagement in written form, the better.
