Grading Criteria

The material covered in this class is complex not only because of the diversity of its form and historical context, but also because of the complexity of the cultural practices that you will have to grasp in order to “see” the buildings and spaces we will be studying. The readings have been carefully chosen with this in mind. Some of them will be easier than others to understand, many of them will have to be read more than once, for a number of them, you’ll want to read other things (on the reserve shelf) alongside them. Because of the necessity for careful reading 40% your grade in the class will be based upon your attendance and thoughtful participation in class discussions, from which I will be able to determine if you have done the reading (and how well you’ve done it). In addition, you will be expected to participate in online discussions every week (Sundays and Tuesdays in particular), these discussions are designed to prepare you for class and to deepen the analysis that we are able to do in class. Your thoughtful participation in these fora will account for 20% of your grade. Finally, the two writing assignments will account for the remaining 40%.
