Historiographic Essay Submissions

Please submit the written review one week after your in class presentation of the same material.

These essays should perform three major tasks:
1) You should attempt to place your major readings in context with other works on the topic.
2) The essay should summarize the major points of all works as succinctly as possible.
3) You should attempt to assess the relative merit of the viewpoints and whether or not the author has convinced you of their position.

For these sections, you can think about the following questions: What new ideas do the texts contribute to the historiographical debate? Do the authors rely on new evidence or make use of new theories?  What other works are referenced through the readings, both in a positive and negative manner?  How successfully are the various authors at accomplishing what they set out to do?  Are there viewpoints you find more compelling having read through the debate?  Is there a historical component to the viewpoints (certain viewpoints were popular, but now are out of favor or vice versa)?
