What is Art History? What do art historians do? This course considers those questions through a study of art from the Renaissance through the Modern periods. As a discussion-based class, the course focuses on different periods of art history and the methods and theories that art historians use to "interrogate" them and their constituent works of art. Our tasks will be to learn how to formulate questions that allow us to engage with visual objects and their historical/cultural contexts, to develop a vocabulary for analyzing works of art, as well as to develop methodological approaches to relating works of art to larger cultural issues.
