Crime and obsession exist at an intersection in American film. Over 8 weeks and 9 films, we will examine how American movies have explored crimes that lead to obsession, obsession that leads to crime and a variety of other combinations of and conversations between the two.
Some of these movies are held as all-time classics of the art form. Some of them were rediscovered years after being written off. Some of them are obscure, and have not received much attention positively or negatively. Some of them are reviled. None of them are perfect, but their imperfection is always interesting and often magnificent.
This class is a half-semester long conversation about these movies and their shared content. You might find a new favorite film. You might bear witness to something you never want to see again. But no matter how you react to these movies and their content, you will get to have an interesting conversation about them and learn something about film in the process.
